Reflections from the beach

Arriving felt really great. I travelled across the world and came back to familiar surroundings.

It’s a perfect day in Tel Aviv. 30 (86), just a touch of humidity, and slight wisps of clouds adorning blue skies. Pristine Mediterranean waters, cool enough to refresh, warm enough to comfort.

And it does seem to comfort. Not knowing what to expect, given recent rocket attacks, I’m finding here many Israelis, relaxing, riding the waves, and finding some peace in the moment.

Granted there are many more empty chairs on the beach than I’m accustomed to seeing.

My taxi driver, Arthur, a young Israeli who came here from Moldova when at the age of six, told me that what he finds so awful about this conflict is that there are so many innocent Gazans who suffer at the hands of, or at least because of their government. Everyone suffers because Ḥamas holds the reigns. Arthur felt especially bad for those entrepreneurs who can’t earn any income, with few products coming into Gaza. How awful that basic necessities like construction materials have been used for tools of destruction rather than for building up society. Pipes and concrete have becomes sources of weapons and tunnels, and so of course, Israel has reason to keep them from coming through the borders. Many of Arthur’s friends are serving in Gaza right now, on reserve duty. He was sick at the time they were called up, otherwise he would be there too.

I’m feeling a lot of conflicting emotions. Like Arthur, I feel for the plight of innocent Gazans. I feel for those Israelis living close to Gaza who will be celebrating their Shabbat under the protection of their bomb shelters. And yet I feel a tremendous sense of joy and gratitude to be sitting here, enjoying a Carlsberg and Shnitzel salad at the beach, with a Tel Aviv cat and several hundred Israelis enjoying life to keep me company.

Israel, a place of conflict and a home for peace.

Shabbat shalom.
