Injustice served?

Was injustice served yesterday in the Grand Jury’s decision against indicting Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown? I confess, I do want to say yes. That the killing of an unarmed black young man by a white police officer warrants fierce legal repercussions. But I don’t know enough of what happened that night several months ago, and it sounds like the jury thought long and hard with the quantity of testimony presented.

This does not mean that injustice is not taking place. The amount of anger present in Ferguson does not come into being in the aftermath of one incident. For a long time there has been distrust in this country between people of color and law enforcement and this comes for good reason. Distrust is not easily dispersed. As President Obama pointed out in his statement yesterday, “You have young men of color in many communities who are more likely to end up in jail or in the criminal justice system than they are in a good job or in college.”

One of my favorite midrashim teaches that when God created the first human being, God formed Adam out of dust from all over the world: yellow clay, white sand, black loam, and red soil. Therefore, no one can declare to any race or color of people that they do not belong here since this soil is not their home. (Yalkut Shimoni 1:13).

Though yesterday’s decision may in fact have been just, injustice has once again been brought to light. There are many in this nation and world who are not treated equally, with respect, trust and love. There are those who are born into underprivileged communities, who are given far fewer resources to survive and thrive than others. There are those who are born with a distinct disadvantage from the get-go because of the color of their skin and because not enough people have taken the above midrash to heart.

There is another result of God’s creating Adam from all the different colors of soil— Adam’s mix means that the prototypical human is one of each color and of all colors. That first being created in the divine image is black and white, red and yellow. The divine image, refracted through us, is black, white, red and yellow. Which means, that people of all colors, are manifestations of the divine and really ought to be treated accordingly, by laws and political systems, and all who uphold them.

I hope that the tumult of this week serves as a clarion call to American society. Our social system is flawed and something must be done. People are angry, and the reason for this anger is so much bigger than Michael Brown.

But then again, in our tradition, one life is the equivalent of a universe. To take a life is to destroy a world, and to save one is to create a world anew (Sanhedrin 37a).
